In 2003, my wife and I went through the most difficult experience of our lives. My wife and I burned through what little was left in our savings account and my 401k – which wasn’t much after the stock market had crashed in 2001 (sounds even more familiar today, doesn’t it?)

Not only that, but my wife was still in college, working a part-time job and we just had a baby. Talk about expenses and stress.

Now, I’d served in the Marines and had been shot at during the Gulf War, but this was actually worse. In the military, I was on my own – nobody was depending on me to pay the bills and be the bread-winner in the family. This was different. Now, I had no money, plenty of bills (including my mortgage), a wife and a new mouth to feed.

How Bad Things Happen To Good People

I was a wreck. I couldn’t sleep and was put on medication for depression. I was having migraines from stress.

I thought I was a complete loser. A failure to myself and my family.

I tried everything to get out of this situation.

I talked to our lender. They put us on a forbearance plan without caring if we understood the paperwork. We were treated like a number, not like people who needed help. All they did was INCREASE our mortgage payment… just what we needed.

Next I talked to a credit counselor. She charged us up front - $300 that we didn’t have – only to tell my wife and I that there was nothing she could do for us and suggested we file bankruptcy. We could have figured that out without paying this so-called expert!

Later that year, we did just that. Filed for bankruptcy and went through the foreclosure process. It was a terrible year for me – and for my family. Embarrassing. Humiliating. Frustrating. Worse than I could have ever imagined.

Only after it was over did I find out the truth about the process. Found out that I might have:
